Employee benefits and (especially in British English) benefits in kind (also called fringe benefits, perquisites, perqs or perks) are various non-wage compensations provided to employees in addition to their normal wages or salaries. In instances where an employee exchanges (cash) wages for some other form of benefit is generally referred to as a 'salary sacrifice' or 'salary exchange' arrangement. In most countries, most kinds of employee benefits are taxable to at least some degree.

Examples of these benefits include: housing (employer-provided or employer-paid), group insurance (health, dental, life etc.), disability income protection, retirement benefits, daycare, tuition reimbursement, sick leave, vacation (paid and non-paid), social security, profit sharing, funding of education, and other specialized benefits.

The purpose of the benefits is to increase the economic security of employees.

The term perqs (also perks) is often used colloquially to refer to those benefits of a more discretionary nature. Often, perks are given to employees who are doing notably well and/or have seniority. Common perks are take-home vehicles, hotel stays, free refreshments, leisure activities on work time (golf, etc.), stationery, allowances for lunch, and—when multiple choices exist—first choice of such things as job assignments and vacation scheduling. They may also be given first chance at job promotions when vacancies exist.

How can I offer pre-paid gas cards to my employees as a "benefit"?
Q. I'd like to offer $100 prepaid gas cards to my employees every month and structure it as a tax free benefit. I'd pay less as an employer and they would get the gas card with "pre tax" dollars. In the end, a $100 gas card, instead of cash compensation, would be like the employee receiving $120-$135 post tax dollars. Any LEGAL ideas?

A. I don't think it can be considered "tax free". It is additional compensation.

what do "require a separate membership initiated by the employee" and "fees" and "benefits" mean?
Q. These insurance programs are administered by the trade unions but require a separate membership initiated by the employee. Your fees and benefits will depend on your field of work and on the insurance program you choose. thanks.

A. You do not automatically have the insurance just because you are a member of a union. You have to apply for the programs yourself. You will have to pay for the insurance program. The amount you pay, and the coverage you get will depend on what you decide to sign up for. Typically, the more you pay each month, the better your insurance coverage will be.
